2008, International Year of Sanitation

Every 20 seconds a child dies because he has no access to sanitation facilities. For us in Switzerland toilets are a given. Therefore, we can hardly imagine that in the 21 century have 2.6 billion people or 40% (!!!) of the world's population lack access to such a facility. A clean, "quiet place" is not a luxury item: Every 20 seconds in the 5-year-old child dies from a diarrheal disease that is directly on the lack of basic sanitation with waste water, hygiene and clean drinking water due. In the past ten years, this silent tragedy of children killed more victims than all armed conflicts since 1945.
The UN calls the international community their commitment to mind. The United Nations General Assembly has declared the situation to fight. On 21 November launched the UN in New York why the International Year of Sanitation. Here, the international community is reminded of the obligations it has assumed in the framework of the MDGs. If the number of people without basic sanitation should be halved by 2015, rapid action is required.
